Since we opened our first store nearly 50 years ago, we’ve been passionate about Doing it Right for the greater good.
A responsible business where people are proud to work, we care about our people and the future. Here, you can make a difference to your career, Iceland and the planet by doing the right thing for our customers and colleagues.
Iceland was born in November 1970 when Sir Malcolm Walker set up a small shop selling loose frozen food in Oswestry, Shropshire. When Malcolm visited the USA, he was impressed with Marriott Hotels who were famous for their great customer service and slogan – We Do It Right. ‘Doing it Right’ became our watchword.
Sir Malcolm started it and Richard is continuing with the agility to disrupt the world of retail and collaborate with unlikely partners. We’re a family of 25,000 colleagues who share the same ethos and commitment to Doing it Right.
A true community champion, nearly 80% of our store colleagues live within three miles of work. It’s their ideas, energy and enthusiasm that keeps us in touch with what really matters to our local communities and has helped us to raise millions for good causes. While their passion for going the extra mile has earned us an outstanding reputation for customer service. We’ve been named the top supermarket for customer satisfaction two years running!
We continue to lead the way with all kinds of initiatives that enhance the global environment from reducing plastics to eliminating palm oil from our own-brand products.
We’re a true family business that values our people and provides a great place to work. It’s why we’re recognised as one of the Best Big Companies to Work For in the UK.
Having won The Times Best Big Company to Work For in 2012 & 2014, we are very proud to have maintained a Top 10 place ever since.
We support the communities we serve by getting behind great causes through our Charitable Foundation, paying our taxes and selling quality food at good value. Alzheimer’s Research UK are our current charity partner.
We work with our partners and suppliers to build mutually beneficial, long-term partnerships.
We led the way in the UK, removing artificial colours, flavours and preservatives from our own-brand food.
We took the lead globally, banning GM ingredients and taking action against environmentally damaging refrigerants.
We continued to champion ‘doing the right thing’ by launching multiple fundraising initiatives. In particular, playing a leading role in forming the UCL Retail Partnership which led to Sir Malcolm’s knighthood in 2017.
We take on the world’s big environmental and social challenges. We combat climate change, protect the planet, help to tackle poverty and provide opportunities for decent work. And we give our colleagues the freedom to be brave. Be bold. Be Iceland.
